ER Patients Benefit From Clothing Donation

The Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation recently gave New London Family Medical Center's emergency department $1,000 in clothing for patients who need it. This apparel - approximately 30 t-shirts, 30 sweatshirts and 30 pairs of sweatpants in various sizes - is used to clothe patients whose own clothing has been soiled or damaged by illness, injury or treatment.

"Patients and their families are very appreciative of the extra comfort measures that we in the emergency department are able to provide with help from the Foundation," said emergency services manager Sharon St. Louis. "It shows that we really care about patients and their needs beyond the doors of the department."

Often emergencies and the care they call for leave patients' clothing unfit for wear. To remedy this situation for patients returning home or being transferred, the Foundation worked through a regional high school to purchase the apparel. These items, screen-printed with the New London Family Medical Center logo, offer patients the comfort and dignity they deserve, Foundation executive director Deborah Johnson said.

"It's a simple thing, really, but an important one," she added. "Making our patients feel safe and at home in this way meets the Foundation's vision to support healthcare in the communities we serve."

The Wolf River Area Healthcare Foundation was founded in 2003. Its mission is to seek and secure financial resources that ensure New London Family Medical Center has state-of-the-art facilities, equipment, outreach and education.

New London Family Medical Center is a 25-bed, critical access hospital serving New London and nearby communities in Outagamie and Waupaca counties. The hospital, which has been in operation since 1930 and is part of ThedaCare, provides inpatient and outpatient surgery; a 24-hour emergency department; physical, occupational and speech therapies; diagnostic services including laboratory and imaging; pain management; transitional care; and a ThedaCare At Home retail store. A hospital expansion opened in 2010.

July 2009 New Surgical Services Department

New London Family Medical Center proudly opened its new, state of the art Surgical Services Department in July of 2009. This was a huge undertaking, and long over-due. The former space was cramped and out of date in many ways. The whole department moved to a new home, which was part of the $10 million expansion that NLFMC underwent in the last two years. With patient comfort and safety as its number one goal in the designing process, the new Surgical Center is a much-improved environment, for the patients and the staff.

The re-location and renovation of the Surgical Services Department is due in part to the considerable generosity of a New London citizen. Mr. Stanley Cottrill issued a challenge to the residents of New London and its surrounding communities in the early part of 2009. He stated that he would donate $50,000 for the new department if ‘neighbors’ collectively came up with $50,000 to match him. The campaign was an astounding success and made a large impact on the NLFMC campus. Thank you to Mr. Cottrill and to all who made gifts toward that endeavor.

July 2009 New Ambulance

With funds raised from the Fifth Annual Dinner in the fall of 2008, the Foundation was honored to present NLFMC with a new ambulance in July of 2009. The Emergency Services crew was very grateful to receive the new “rig” and says it has made a big impact on each ambulance call.

Through community gifts, the Foundation has given New London Family Medical Center $125,000 to fully fund the purchase of a new ambulance. The new rig benefited the community immediately upon its arrival.

The 18-month campaign included two fund-raising dinners as well as lead donations from Dewey and the late Beverly Carl from Manawa and the Bendick Bjelde estate from Marion.

“New London Family Medical Center’s emergency department is grateful for the generosity of the foundation and its donors,” said Dr. Rob Anderson, ER physician and pre-hospital emergency services director. “The ambulance is an important resource for our patients, and it is vital we have the best fleet available.”

With this commitment, a fund was established that will be used solely to support hospital-related services at the Clintonville clinic. Named for Betty Simpson, the new therapy space represents quality, personal care for each patient. It gives caregivers the flexibility to address the future requirements of their patients be it for higher levels of care of greater access to the therapy needs of the community.
